The "Pygmalion Effect" is a psychological concept that explains how expectations or environmental influences on others can affect their performance and behavior. This effect illustrates the mechanism where expectations shape our reality.

 

The Pygmalion Effect can be categorized into positive and negative effects:

 

Positive Pygmalion Effect:

The positive Pygmalion Effect refers to the phenomenon where positive expectations enhance an individual's performance and behavior. For example, if a teacher has high expectations for a student, the student is more likely to strive for high achievements. This is also related to the concept of self-fulfilling prophecy.

In other words, it refers to the phenomenon where individuals or groups create reality based on certain expectations or beliefs they hold. Negative Pygmalion Effect:

The negative Pygmalion Effect signifies the phenomenon where negative expectations diminish an individual's performance and behavior. If a supervisor expects low performance from a specific employee, the employee is more likely to exhibit behavior that aligns with those low expectations.

 

The Pygmalion Effect can manifest in social interactions, education, and organizational settings. It is particularly noticeable in interactions such as teacher-student, supervisor-subordinate, and parent-child relationships.

 

This effect is based on the principle that expectations model and trigger actual behavior. As this effect can serve as a powerful mechanism for changing the dynamics of interactions, maintaining positive and supportive expectations is crucial. With the mind of the positive Pygmalion effect, individuals can develop higher achievements and self-efficacy.
